What is Qurbani and its Importance

Qurbani is an Islamic ritual where an animal is sacrificed every year during Eid al-Adha. This is an act of worship that shows devotion and obedience to Allah (SWT), earning reward from Him and strengthening faith. Eligible Muslims all over the world carry out this sacrifice in the best way for them to not just show devotion to Islam but to also commemorate the great sacrifice the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was willing to make. He had an unwavering commitment to sacrificing the thing he loved very dearly, his son Ismail, for Allah (SWT). Ibrahim (AS) was instructed to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah’s command. However, just before it could be completed, Allah (SWT) sent down a ram to sacrifice in place of Ismail to reward Ibrahim’s devotion to Him. This sacrifice started the tradition of Qurbani.

When is Qurbani 2026?

Qurbani 2026 begins after the Eid prayer on the first day of Eid al-Adha, which falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. This is expected to fall on May 27th, so donations need to be given promptly before this date. Qurbani can be carried out during the three extra days after Eid al-Adha, known as the tashreeq days, which are the 11th, 12th and 13th of Dhul Hijjah until sunset of the last day. So, for 2026, you need to give Qurbani in time for the sacrifice to be carried out between May 27th and May 29th. These dates may change closer to the time, depending on the sighting of the moon.

Who Has to Give Qurbani?

When it comes to who has to give Qurbani, there are set Islamic rules that outline when a Muslim is eligible to make the donation. These rules are very similar to those for Zakat, but are only slightly different. The act of worship should be done by every sane, adult Muslim who isn’t travelling at the time of Eid al-Adha, which means that those who are travelling at this time can be exempt from Qurbani. As well as these rules, the sacrifice is based on a Muslim’s wealth, just like Zakat. This means that those who possess wealth beyond their basic needs, meeting or exceeding the Nisab threshold, are required to do this act of worship. If a believer owns equal to or more than the current level of Nisab, which is 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, they should donate Qurbani.

What’s the Price of Qurbani?

The price of Qurbani varies depending on several factors. One of the greatest things about giving Qurbani online through CLF is that we offer a variety of donation options to choose from, so that you can give within your means without creating financial stress. One of the factors that changes the price of Qurbani is the animal you want to sacrifice. Animals work in shares, with a small animal, like goats and sheep, being one share and larger animals, like buffalo, cow and camel, equalling seven shares. This means that a smaller animal costs more than purchasing a share in a larger animal. You can even donate toward a full, larger animal if you wish to do so.

Another factor that affects the cost is the country you want the sacrifice is done in. Some countries have more access to livestock than others, while some areas are very remote or are a conflict zone. These remote parts of the world and conflict zones are where the need is most greatest, so the sacrifice costs more for these parts. However, your donation is very powerful for these communities as it helps them escape poverty and hardship.

Qurbani Shares Explained

Qurbani shares basically mean how many people’s Qurbani an animal is equivalent to. The sacrifice is an individual responsibility for all able adult Muslims, meaning that if a family has four adults who meet the requirements, they’re each responsible for their Qurbani and cannot donate a share as a family. So, they will need to give four shares to cover each eligible person.

A small animal, like a goat or sheep, is equal to one share of Qurbani, so one person’s sacrifice, while a larger animal, like a cow, camel or buffalo, is equivalent to seven people’s Qurbani, allowing adults to only purchase one share in the animal to cover their sacrifice

FAQs

The Qurbani donation is a form of giving to charity to handle the sacrifice of an animal on your behalf. This is used because many Muslims cannot carry out the sacrifice themselves and allows them to still show devotion to Allah (SWT), earn reward from Him, commemorate the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and help those in need through the meat.
Sane adult Muslims who are not travelling during the days of Eid al-Adha are required to give Qurbani. They must also meet or exceed the Nisab threshold at the time of Eid to do the sacrifice.
This is dependent on the type of animal you choose to donate to and the region in which you choose the sacrifice to be made. Smaller animals equal one Qurbani share and so are more expensive than larger animals, as these are equal to seven Qurbani shares and are more affordable when purchasing just one share in these animals.
