Our newly built orphan training and education centre is a safe space where children can gain vital knowledge and skills to help create a brighter future. There are millions of children all around the world who don’t have access to an education, which hinders their development and success for the future. One part of the world where many children are facing poverty and don’t have access to educational resources is Uganda. This country has around 26% of children who are out of school, with about 2.5 million children being orphaned. There is a serious educational crisis in Uganda, and so many orphans lack the basic necessities to live, with no way out of poverty because they can’t learn and develop their skills.
This is why we helped to develop the Supplementary School for Orphans in Mbale, Uganda, which is a part of our International Welfare Project. Work to create this building began in the summer of 2016 and has been an ongoing project where builders have continuously developed this much-needed facility. This facility helps children to thrive and offers a comprehensive education for orphans to learn vital subjects that can help them flourish in life. Alongside an education to build their skills and create a brighter future, orphans can socialise with other children and create lasting connections.
The Centre aims to provide essential educational support for orphans to help alleviate the long-term effects of poverty. It makes learning accessible to needy children, so that they can gain basic skills that they can build on and find a career pathway to help them achieve success and escape poverty. This centre helps to make children’s dreams come true and is more than a place to learn. It is a place to get vital support for every aspect of their lives and a safe space to retreat to and escape the hardships they face every day at home.
This supplementary school can also serve as a community hub for orphans that supports them every step of the way for various parts of their lives. Our orphan appeal that funds the development of this building helps orphaned children gain many skills that aren’t just a way to set them on the path to success for the rest of their lives, but also everyday life skills that they need to grow as a person.

This is achieved by providing the children with fundamentals such as English, Maths and I.T., enabling them to function confidently, effectively and independently in life and in a work environment.

They deal with loss, instability and limited resources because they no longer have the funds for basic necessities. In many countries, including Uganda, when a child loses their father, the whole family struggle to survive. This is due to the fact that men typically earn the money to provide shelter, food and other basic necessities, while women take care of the family. So, when a father passes away, the mother is left with few skills and knowledge to get a job and funding fades, leaving the family to scavenge for food and necessities. In many cases, the community can cast them aside, so they lose all support. This means that many orphans can’t even feed themselves, never mind have access to an education.
Education is a powerful tool, and every child in the world deserves access to a quality education.
