Shab e Barat 2026

With the month of Sha’ban not long away, we draw ourselves closer to the night of Shab e Barat, also known as the night of forgiveness by many. During this sacred night, many Muslims around the world immerse themselves in seeking the Mercy of Allah, spending the evening in worship and devotion.

What is Shab e Barat?

Shab e Barat, also known as Laylatul Bara’ah, or Nifs Sha’ban, falls on the night of the 14th or 15th of Sha’ban, the 8th month in the Islamic calendar. Many Muslim communities, especially in the South Asia region, spend the night seeking the forgiveness of Allah, repenting for their previous sins.

Though the exact date of Shab e Barat will be subject to the sighting of the Sha’ban moon, believers anticipate for the mid-month of Sha’ban with hope and worship.

Importance of Shab e Barat: Why the Night is Honoured

The importance of Shab e Barat lies down to the chance of renewal through the forgiveness and Mercy of Allah.

Many believe that on the Shab e Barat night of forgiveness, Allah descends to the lowest heaven, granting forgiveness to those who ask.

It has been narrated by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be Upon Him) that Allah gazes at His creation on the fifteenth night of Sha’ban and then forgives all His slaves except for two types of people: those who attribute partners to Allah and those who bear enmity toward their fellow Muslims [Ahmad].

Though some hadith around this night are considered weak, many scholars still encourage extra worship and repentance on Shab e Barat.

What Happens on Shab e Barat?

During Shab e Barat, many Muslims spend the night in worship, staying awake to recite the Quran and remember Allah through the acts of Dhikr and supplication. Mosques in some places also hold special night prayers for believers to reflect and pray for the mercy of Allah.

Some communities like to give out sweets or food as gestures of unity, though acts like such are seen more as cultural than religious.

What to Pray on Shab e Barat

The best thing to start with on Shab e Barat is to immerse yourself in prayers of forgiveness, reciting duas with sincere devotion. A couple of duas that are often repeatedly recited during this night after voluntary prayers are -

  • Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa’fu annee

O Allah, You are Forgiving and love to forgive, so forgive us.

  • Rabbanā lā tuākhidh’nā in nasīnā aw akhta’nā

Our Lord! Do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake.

Many believers also send Salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) and recite chapters from the Quran, such as Surah Yasin, and Surah Rahman, though there is no fixed prayer to be made for this night.

Shab e Barat Hadith

There is a variance amongst many scholars when it comes to the night of Shab e Barat. Hadiths authenticities are often questioned, with some scholars reporting them as weak.

Though the below hadith are widely cited, the authenticity of them are often debated between many scholars.

It has been narrated that the Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) said that on this night, from sunset until dawn, Allah asks His servants, ′Is there anyone seeking forgiveness from Me so that I may forgive him? Is there anyone seeking provision from Me so I may provide for him? Is there anyone suffering so I may relieve his suffering?′ [Ibn Majah]

Another hadith states: “When it is the night of the middle of Sha’ban, spend its night in prayer and observe a fast on that day.” [Ibn Majah]

At the end of it all, it is important to treat any worship during this night as voluntary worship made with sincere intention, and not to treat any ritual as compulsory.

Do You Fast on Shab e Barat?

The topic of fasting on Shab e Barat is also universally debated amongst those with knowledge. Some hadith suggest that fasting on the 15th of Sha’ban is recommended. However, others note that the Messenger of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) would fast many days in Sha’ban.

It is important to note that it is also from the Sunnah to fast the bright days (known as the 13th, 14th and 15th) of every month, not just alone in Sha’ban. Due to this, many scholars agree that it is permissible to fast on the 15th of Sha’ban, but it is not obligatory.

Ink 3, ShapeInk 2, ShapeInk 1, ShapeIt has been narrated that one of the companions of Allah noted to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) that he saw him fast more in the month of Sha’ban than any other month. To that the Messenger of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) said that “Sha’ban is a month that people neglect, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which actions are raised to the Lord of the Worlds, and I love for my actions to be raised whilst I am fasting". [An-Nasai]

At Community Lighthouse Foundation, we focus on shared worship and community support, encouraging donations and acts of charity for those in need. We hope and pray that the month of Sha’ban becomes a source of renewal and mercy for you and your loved ones.

May Allah accept any of our efforts during Shab e Barat, granting us forgiveness for any wrongdoings.
