Pay Kaffarah

There are specific rules in Islam for when a Muslim doesn’t fulfil an obligation. These outline other ways to fulfil a duty when it hasn’t been done to make it up and start afresh. One of these ways for specific circumstances is to make the payment of Kaffarah. This provides a way for Muslims to make amends for mistakes they have made, covering the obligation of fasting and oaths. It allows believers to show mercy and seek forgiveness from Allah (SWT) for sinning, compensating for the actions they’ve made that are avoidable.

Because the Kaffarah donation covers missing a fast, it is usually something that is done during the holy month of Ramadan. This is because most Muslims fast during this month to show devotion to Allah (SWT), renew their faith, cleanse their minds, bodies and souls, and earn immense rewards. Fasting is a very important act of worship in Islam, and Ramadan is the dedicated month to observe abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours. It is one of the pillars of Islam, known as Sawm, and helps believers earn rewards and build resilience. Kaffarah is a payment to make up for missing fasts intentionally with no good reason.

What is Kaffarah?

So, what is Kaffarah? Kaffarah is a type of redemption that allows Muslims to seek forgiveness from Allah (SWT) for intentionally missing their obligations with no valid reason as to why they have done it. It can be a donation given to charity to make amends for sinning while helping those who cannot afford to feed themselves. As well as this, the Kaffarah payment cleanses believers' sins and helps them to start afresh with their faith due to gaining forgiveness from Allah (SWT) for not carrying out their duties.

Kaffarah donations are usually made during Ramadan, since it is the time in the Islamic calendar for fasting and breaking a fast leads to paying Kaffarah. The payment must be made by those who intentionally break their fast at any point during the month without a good reason. When a Muslim knowingly eats or drinks, or even carries out any prohibited actions during daylight hours, they have intentionally broken their fast and must pay Kaffarah. Although fasting is tied to Kaffarah, the payment isn’t only made for breaking the fast in Ramadan. It’s also a payment that has to be made when other obligations are purposely missed, such as oaths a Muslim has made to Allah (SWT).

Kaffarah for Breaking Fast

The Kaffarah for breaking fast during Ramadan is a payment made to charity to help those in need and gain forgiveness from Allah (SWT). However, it’s not just solely a payment because there are two different ways that a Muslim can make up for intentionally breaking a fast consciously. This means that a charitable donation isn’t the only way to compensate for your sins, as you can choose one of the two actions that are highlighted in Islamic regulations. Both ways help Muslims to be forgiven and make it up to Allah (SWT), which means there is no excuse for anyone not to seek redemption due to each way accommodating different needs and abilities.

The actions that can be taken for the Kaffarah payment are either fasting for two months back-to-back or feeding 60 hungry people if a Muslim isn’t able to fast. The donation is given to a charitable organisation to feed those most in need and help save lives. Community Lighthouse Foundation can take your Kaffarah donation and distribute it to vulnerable communities in impoverished areas of the world. Kaffarah for Breaking Oath

As well as the common Kaffarah for breaking fast, there is a Kaffarah for breaking oath. This needs to be paid when a Muslim breaks an oath that they have made to Allah (SWT). So, when they take a name in His name to strengthen their words to do (or not do) something and don’t follow this oath, Muslims must pay Kaffarah. The payment should be made when the oath is broken at any time, or even if the oath isn’t completed by the time that a Muslim stated when taking it.

The donation is different from the Kaffarah for breaking fast. It requires Muslims to make a payment that equates to feeding ten needy people with staple food items or giving them clothing. If this payment cannot be made, then a believer must fast for three consecutive days instead.

You can also pay Kaffarah for breaking oath to us to help feed the most vulnerable communities and provide sustenance to help them survive.

How Much is Kaffarah?

So, how much is Kaffarah? It is typically the cost of feeding 60 hungry people, especially when a Muslim has knowingly broken a fast in Ramadan. The amount that needs to be paid is based on the cost of staple food items in your region, which means that it can vary slightly region by region and year by year. On top of this, the Kaffarah payment includes providing two meals to each person.

The donation is equal to 750 grams of staple foods for 60 people in need, which, in total, needs to match 45kg of food. For Ramadan in 2025, this costs around £300 in total for each purposely missed or broken fast. The payment isn’t expected to change much for Ramadan 2026, so it will be roughly around the same price. However, the cost of staple food items can change, meaning the payment can be a little more. Due to this, it’s best to check for the month how much Kaffarah is.
