Pay Fidya

The holy month of Ramadan is a hugely significant time in the Islamic calendar and is designed for utter devotion to Allah (SWT). It is a time for spiritual renewal through increased acts of worship, and it is a dedicated time for the highly virtuous act of fasting. Muslims worldwide spend the month devoting themselves to Islam and fasting during daylight hours, only eating and drinking before the sun rises and after it sets. Fasting is one of the greatest acts of worship a Muslim can do because it is one of the five pillars, known as Sawm. Due to this, every able believer must fast throughout the holy month and increase other forms of worship to earn immense rewards and purify their hearts and souls.

Fasting can be a difficult challenge of self-control and restraint, which can take a toll on the body. This means that not every Muslim is able to fast due to their health, age or temporary conditions that make them miss a few fasts during the month or all of them. For these believers, it can be difficult to correctly observe Ramadan and reap the rewards. However, Allah (SWT) is very understanding and never expects every single Muslim to fast. This is why there are regulations that stipulate who is exempt from fasting. For these exempt people, Allah (SWT) created the Fidya payment to ensure that everyone can fulfil their duty and earn the rewards and spiritual renewal that the month provides.

What is Fidya?

It’s easy to wonder, “What is Fidya”, because there are other charitable donations that should be paid for missing fasts, such as Kaffarah. This donation is a payment that has to be made by those who cannot fast for a valid reason. The payment has to be made to a reputable charity, and the price must reflect feeding one hungry person two meals or feeding two less fortunate people a one-time meal for each day that a Muslim has missed their fast.

The Fidya payment has to be paid by any able Muslim who meets Islamic regulations that are stated in the Quran. These people are the elderly, a menstruating, pregnant or breastfeeding woman, a person who’s travelling or anyone disqualified due to medical reasons. If a believer meets these exemptions, they can either make up their missed fasts at a later date during the Islamic year or, if that isn’t possible, pay Fidya.

The Importance of the Fidya Payment

The payment of Fidya for missed fasts is an essential way for those who cannot fast for a valid reason to fulfil their obligation during Ramadan. It allows these exempt believers to make it up to Allah (SWT) for the fasts they’ve missed during the holy month. The chance to donate Fidya lets those unable to fast at any time carry out their duty and observe Ramadan correctly, so they can also cleanse spiritually and earn rewards from Allah (SWT).

This donation is also important in Islam because fasting is a very sacred act of worship. It’s one of the five pillars (Sawm) and has to be done throughout Ramadan. Fasting helps Muslims grow closer to Allah (SWT) by showing Him self-discipline, which pleases Him. But even though this act is highly valued in Islam, Allah (SWT) is very understanding and forgiving. He knows that not every Muslim can observe the fast throughout the month for a good reason, so He created Fidya as a way for them to partake in the holy month and earn the immense rewards of the month.

When to Give Fidya for Missed Fasts?

Fidya for missed fasts needs to be paid when a Muslim has to unintentionally break their fast during Ramadan for a good reason. This could be due to long-term illness, medication or a temporary break for things such as menstruation. Fidya is needed for those who can’t carry out the days of missed fasts at another time during the year, so for those with long-term illness, medication or old age. For example, if a Muslim expects that they cannot fast later on, or they can’t ever regain the ability to fast again, then they should pay Fidya. So, if a believer can’t fast at any point in Ramadan temporarily but they can resume the fast at a later date, they shouldn’t donate Fidya and make up the fasts instead.

Those who miss out on only a few days of fasting or someone who accidentally or deliberately breaks their fast in the daylight hours, don’t qualify to give Fidya. The donation is only made by those who think that they can’t make up their missed fasts another time, or those who don’t have the health or strength to do it. However, it all depends on the school of thought as to exactly who should pay Fiday because the opinions vary. The Hanfi states that Fidya shouldn’t be given by pregnant or nursing women as they can do their missed fasts at a later date, while the Shafi’is and Hanbalis believe Fidya should only be given for Muslims who can never fast again in their lifetime.

The Amount for Fidya 2026

If you need to give Fidya in 2026, you will need to understand how much it costs for one missed day and work out how much you owe for every day you’ve missed. The price of the payment can vary because it’s based on the cost of staple food items to provide two meals to the hungry for each day of missed fast. Fidya 2026 is expected to be around £6 for each day. This means that if you can’t observe the fast at all throughout the month of Ramadan for a good reason, you will need to pay this fee for the whole 30 days. The payment of Fidya for not fasting for the whole month would be around £180.
